So it’s been a full week since I’ve moved into the new house here on Gunson Street. I’m already really enjoying living here with 3 other people: Erin, Matt, and Colleen. The house is very nice—4 (legal) bedrooms, a couple bathrooms, and a very cozy living room in which we now have 2 couches and 3 chairs. I think we’re all pretty excited about living here. Not only is the house so nice, but it’s a 2 minute walk from campus; there are lots of houses and apartments all around.
Anyway, here are a couple of pictures…

MSU has this wireless thing that is in “beta” where you log in with your msunet id before you access the internet through the wireless. It’s only offered in some of the buildings around campus right now like the business building that I’m in right now listening to my most uninteresting class—marketing. Anyway, I just felt like posting so I could say: (1) I’m trying to organize to have Scottfro come to my dorm room for a dnbradio broadcast some time next week, and (2) I just bought a bunch of IBM :)
So I just got back from my TC375 exam that began at 7:45 a-freaking-m this morning. I really enjoyed this class except that it meets at 8:30 am (Wednesdays and Fridays). That usually hurts my brain since they’re the only days I need to get up that early, and I never adjusted to that sort of schedule. So today even more than usual, I’m going to bed. Right now, I’m eating my “breakfast” (second half of last night’s Jimmy John’s). The PJ’s are already on. I’m ready for unconciousness. Not sure why I blogged this… maybe just cuz I haven’t posted anything in a while.
While I finish my last couple bites, I’ll tell you that TC375, “Computer Mediated Communication,” was actually a pretty interesting class. Instead of focusing on the history or technical aspects of technology, we did readings and discussions on the social impacts of technology. Anyway, I thought it was a very engaging topic and useful for any TC major.
Goodnight.
So I wrote this paper for my TC201 class. It’s only about 3 pages long, but I thought it was sort of interesting and vaguely worth posting on my site. So, for whoever’s interested, you can read my paper. Just click the more link after the first paragraph.
BitTorrent is a truly amazing technology. Invented and implemented by lone hacker Bram Cohen and distributed for free, it has quickly become one of the most popular and revolutionary P2P-style file sharing systems on the Internet. It has been successfully used to distribute giant files ranging from several hundred megabytes to gigabytes in size across the Internet without the use of a monolithic server with fixed bandwidth. Companies like Red Hat have been distributing their free software (which can be several CD's in size) across the Internet without saturating their own servers' upload bandwidth -- a huge legitimate win for such legal content. This revolutionary technology, like so many others, has its potential for abuse. It can be used by pirates to share large video files and software quickly and efficiently without the bandwidth issues that arise from serving them up with HTTP or FTP from a single host. The Induce Act, however, aims to correct this very "problem," but many people say the act is far more reaching than its proposers will have you believe.

Today was my second day of classes, so I’ve gotten a taste for all of them except the one that meets at 8:30 am Wednesdays and Fridays. That’s what I get to look forward to nice and early tomorrow morning. (Joy.) My classes seem cool, mostly telecom classes that are at least somewhat engaging.
We just had “open door night” here on Two West. That means we get half an hour to go say hi to the girls on their side of the floor, and they get half an hour to come meet us. It was a bit of a disappointment when about 15 guys went over there and there were only like 4-5 doors open and it seemed like none of the girls even knew it was open door night. Then about 6-8 girls came over to our side. All in all, it was a pretty weak turnout, but I did meet some new folks on my floor which is cool.
I need to take some pictures of the fun I’m having over here… Maybe this calls for another photo album. Stay tuned.
I got here and moved all my things up to my room late last night (like 8:00pm or so). I would have taken a picture of my room to post here, but it’s really pretty boring right now. I don’t have any posters or anything to obscure my big, blank, white walls, so my room looks pretty bare. I also want to rearrange the furniture a bit yet.
I did, however, get my computers set up. It was a bit of work, though. When I put my Quicken on the network and turned it on, it didn’t want to use dhcp properly, and I couldn’t get it on the network. Instead of spending time figuring out why it wasn’t working, I spent the time loading none other than my favorite OS, Gentoo Linux, on it. Quicken.ath.cx is now home to my ftp server, among other things. (Let me know if you want an ftp account.)
I didn’t do anything too exciting last night, so I’m going to go try and have some fun tonight. C4tch u 0n th3 fl1p5id3.
Today is the Tuesday of my last week of classes. Next week will be finals and last-chance parties on the Michigan State Campus. While part of me is bummed to part with my friends in the dorm and on campus, the other half is eager to begin working at Quicken Loans this summer. Handling billions in loans every year, they’re a big company rated “13th best company to work for” in Forbes magazine. Anyway, it sounds like we have a lot to offer each other.. more on that story as it develops.
I’m having a good time with my camera.. got some photo albums up at thread.ath.cx/original. (If the link is broken, it’s probably cuz it’s after Friday May 7, and I’ve left for home where there’s only dialup.) I’ve also learned how to use the Gimp to stitch together several photos (in the example, 11 of them) to make a panoramic image. I did a 180 degree one, so my roommate had to outdo me with a full 360 degree shoot. Be ready to use that horizontal scrollbar. :)
We just had hall elections for next year’s Wilson dorm council offices. My RA down the hall is running for President, and my good friend across the hall is running for Vice President. So we’re in this little classroom down on the first floor, hearing speeches and filling out ballots. We all vote for P and VP.. several people thought the important part was over – they left. At this point, the devilgirl leading the operation says, “Oh, our thingy of conduct says that you must stay for the full duration of the meeting for your vote to count. We’ll have to do a re-vote.” I’m thinking WTF! I mean she didn’t even say anything about that. So I say to her, “Can I go tell my friends what you just said?” And she goes, “Sure.” So I dart out the door and catch them before they get all the way down the hall. When we get back, she won’t let us back in the room because the meeting had already started. And that was final. Wow.. some people astonish me. Sorry, I just needed to vent there.
